Sino-Nepal Joint Research Center for Geography Launched

The Sino-Nepal Joint Research Center for Geography was inaugurated in Tribhuvan University, Nepal (TU) on April 28, 2014.  

The center, jointly build by the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMHE) and TU, takes the south and north slope of the Himalayas as research areas to carry out geography research of mountain hazards, mountain ecology and environment monitoring and mountain development.  

It aims to train more talents specializing in mountain geography, promote research ability of related fields in Nepal, and make contributions to promoting China’s scientific and technological influence power and science and technology exchange and cooperation between China and Nepal.  

Dr. DENG Wei, director of IMHE, felicitated the founding of the Geography Center, and considered it as an important platform for promoting the education quality of Nepal and talents cultivation. DENG emphasized that Chinese government and CAS has been attaching great importance to the cooperation with Nepal. He expressed wishes that both side should make joint efforts to promote capacity building of the center. 

Prof. Gunanidhi Neupane, vice chancellor of TU expressed his heartfelt gratitude to IMHE for its efforts to this cooperation, especially the donation of instruments, equipments and laboratory construction. He said the center will greatly facilitate the teaching and research capacity of geography and many other subjects in TU and make contribution to the training of high-level personnel. On behalf of Nepalese government, Mr. Bishow Prakash Pandit, secretary of Ministry of Education of Nepal, also appreciated the support from Chinese government and IMHE.
