2015-05-15

In the aftermath of the magnitude 8.1 earthquake that hit Nepal on 25 April 2015, TPE has been using its resources and expertise to support relief efforts.

A 12-member CAS working group which includes five TPE scientists has been set up immediately after the earthquake. Aiming at disaster assessment, the CAS working group is now working in Nepal with scientists from ICIMOD and Tribhuvan University. The working group has identified some sites of landslide and other geological disasters from satellite images. The information will be forwarded to Government of Nepal through ICIMOD. The group is also cooperating with the National Seismological Center, Department of Mines and Geology to share seismic date in Nepal so that a deeper analysis of seismic data cover south Tibet, China and Nepal can be done soon.

CAS Kathmandu Center also played an important role in the logistical support for the working group. As an outreach center in Nepal, the Kathmandu Center is responsible for the contact and communication with the government departments of Nepal and international organizations and guarantees the smooth progress of the earthquake assessment work of CAS working group.
